Revamping UN Translation Course: A Professional Development Workshop for AUC Instructors

Fathi M. A. Ahmed recently led an engaging workshop at The American University in Cairo (AUC) titled "Revamping UN Translation Course: A Professional Development Workshop for AUC Instructors." The workshop, held in Cairo’s dynamic academic environment, aimed to enhance the skills of AUC’s translation faculty by focusing on the latest advancements in UN translation practices and methodologies.

Ahmed encouraged faculty members to align their courses with the UN examinations for language professionals, including translators, verbatim reporters, editors, and terminologists. He provided detailed guidance on preparing students to meet the rigorous standards expected by the United Nations, emphasizing the importance of familiarizing them with the specific formats and requirements of these exams.

By drawing on his extensive experience with major international organizations, Ahmed shared practical insights on how to structure courses that not only teach translation skills but also equip students with the technical and terminological expertise required for UN language positions. He highlighted the value of integrating AI-powered CAT tools into the curriculum and stressed the need for courses to balance linguistic precision with cultural sensitivity, which are crucial for UN work.

This workshop served as a call to action for faculty to continuously update their teaching strategies, ensuring their students are fully prepared for the complexities of professional translation in international settings.
